Hambly
An Interview with Allison Kreft

posted May 11, 2007

After discovering Hambly Screen Prints it was a very short time before I fell in {{LOVE}} with it and the {{LOVE}} affair was quick to follow. Why I love Hambly, well, here's the list... Color, Fresh, Funky, and you can see through the overlays! The Rub Ons are just as bright and give you that PUNCH of color on any layout. Hambly can be easily attached to your layouts with snot dots, the paper line is just so beautiful, I love the texture. Allison along with the 'Hambly DT Girls' are a great bunch of gals... very talented, funny, and crazy bunch of gals! When I had the opportunity to interview Allison Kreft of Hambly Screen Prints, I was soooo EXCITED, to put it lightly.

Hambly Studio Screen prints are such a breath of fresh air to the scrap booking industry who came up with the idea?

“It kinda just happened… we wanted to make some new products for the scrapbooking industry. Since we have been a silkscreening studio for over 30 yrs, it just made sense to try silkscreening out own papers.”

Do you believe Hambly will branch out to more products such and ribbon, chipboard, etc.?

“I’m not sure, we like the idea of making the products here in our studios in California. I think a lot of the other products are made overseas…I’m sure we can figure out something else we can produce in house.”

Do you think some scrappers are scared to try Hambly because it is so new, and they feel intimidated?

“I heard that some people are afraid to cut the 12 x 12. We make all the papers & overlays that size so the customer can choose the size they need. Sometimes you just gotta dive in and cut it.”

What is your favorite Hambly product and why?

“The Overlays are my favorite! They are so versatile, you can cut them, paint, stamp & write on them, they are also thick enough to use a page itself. My favorite design is probably “Grandpa’s Wallpaper” - It’s really my grandpa’s wallpaper from his house that we drew in the computer..”

When you get ready to create a layout, what inspires you?

“I would say color inspires me the most. I love putting together a project or mini book and going through our products to figure out new color combinations that will fit with the photos. ”

What is your favorite part about working in the scrap booking industry?

“Well there’s a few things…. Since we are all tied in to the internet, I have met so many wonderful new friends that are all over the world. Plus I love the idea that the art I’m creating for our products, are then being used by other people for their art projects & scrapbooks.”

In your studio, what junk food and drink will we always see on your table while you are working?

“Hmm the junk food changes, but I usually have a latte I’m sipping on for hours ( I love my coffee).”

Winter CHA was a great show and Hambly gave us a lot of new yummy products, can you give us a hint of what is to come for Summer CHA?

“Please *wink wink - nope, can’t give away our secrets, but I’m sure you love it!”

Give us your favorite way to alter or use Hambly that we would not think of?

“Since I have an endless supply of Hambly, I use it everywhere. For my cousins wedding I used the overlays and made them into little clear cone cups. We filled them with leaves (or rose petals) to through at the Bride & Groom. They we such a nice touch. (They work great also for DIY invitations)”

What is the one item in your scrapbook room that you could not live without?

“Ummm – does my ipod count ? Music totally inspires me when I’m being creative…keep me working for hours. ”

I’m a huge fan of your glass art pieces (on my wish list), how did that venture come about for you and where can we see more of it?

“In college I started taking glass art & printing making classes for my graphic design major. That’s when I started experimenting with silk-screening on glass. I own a few kilns now, so in my free time I love to play with my glass art & glass blowing. I have a little website – www.allisonkreft.com

One of my favorite things that you do on your blog is the Hambly Screen print Galley. You feature consumers using Hambly products – you don’t have to be on the DT and the variety of talent is incredible. How many layouts a month do you get emailed to you? Do you think this is a great tool for Hambly in giving back to the consumer?

“It totally varies month to month on the e-mails I get. More people keep using Hambly in creative ways. I love seeing the new ways everyone is using our products, and it’s a great place to showcase the variety of work we get and the different style of artists out there that are using Hambly. ”

Where do you see scrap booking going in the next 5 years?

“That’s a tough question…I kinda see it going way beyond the single pages layouts, to lots more books & home décor projects.”
